Burning Worm

Burning Worm is a bi-annual gathering that originally took place at the town of Laconia, along the northern polar sea of Laco (Dixon's Star). Founded in 33 FY by veterans of the First Sathar War, it was meant to promote tourism to this out-of-the way community on a backwater planet of the Frontier by bringing in artists and forming a temporary community for about a week. The gathering would end with the "burning of the worm" -- a huge effigy of a Sathar.

Over the years, even through Laco's War -- which primarily impacted the planet's southern polar region -- the Burning Worm grew in popularity and size. After the S'sessu were discovered, it was first feared that they would take offense to the festival, but even they joined in the fun wiht the "Slime Troupe" becoming a favorite exhibition of Satharoid aerobatics and displays of combat skills.

There have been incidents of sabotage by alleged Sathar agents at some gatherings, but that only increased its popularity with thrill-seakers.

The success on Laco soon created related Burning Worm events on deserts of other Frontier planets, including Kraatar (Tristkar). It seems the more distant and far removed an gathering is from a big city, the more likely it is to attract Burning Worm organizers.

Once Volturnus was found, it soon became a magnet for "worm burners" as participants call themselves, though the Eorna and several of the other Volturnus races aren't quite sure what to make of the revealers who come to their world.
