My youngest has been pestering me to buy the DVD of the latest Hobbit movie (Desolation of Smaug) which is not actually out till 4/8. So I had been at Target investigating when it was coming out and looking at what they had movies to pick one up for a movie night. I picked up Real Steal and one of the Harry Potter movies that we didn't have. The kids watch Harry Potter over and over so I figured that I'd just get Real Steal for my interest.

Well we watched it last night with the kids cheering out loud during the movie at the appropriate parts. I woke this morning to the youngest watching it agian and when it was over she kept going to the scene selections and going back to the scenes in the movie with the kid dancing with the robot. She completely forgot about the Harry Potter movie (hasn't watched it yet) and told me this morning "this is a good movie!"

At some point today, I'm going to remind the kids that we have the Rockem Sockem Robots game since they haven't thought of that themselves.

Now yeah Real Steal is just Rocky done with Robots and few added wrinkles to the plot- a kid for cuteness, and hugh Jackman for likeability (though he plays a real dirt bag in the beginning with makes the point where he finds redemption sweeter since you really want to like him). and a real underdog David and Goliath story.
There are no real surprises with this movie.

Whats important here is that I've wanted to impart my love of sci fi to my kids but they dont always take to it. however as I'm typing this Rabecca back to chanting the robot's name with the people in the movie. Real Steal isn't a great movie but it was magic with my kids. In fact I was asked last night if there was a Real Steal 2. Move over Harry Potter.

If you have kids, i recommend this movie.
