3D Printers and miniatures

Soon I will be ritired and looking for something to do. The thought hit me to look into home 3D Printers and making miniatures. <br />I have done a small amount of research online and am finding out there is still much to learn before I can settle on one.  <br /><br />Does anyone have one? or at least played around with one?<br />I was looking at extruded plastic to make the items and would like to know how much detail can be put into a creation. <br />But then again I have talent with 3D software.  I have seen some introductory programs that I may be able to use but I wonder how annoying it would be to import images into.<br /><br />Thanks<br />Rum
