Just caught a trailer for Pompeii the movie, it featured scenes that hinted that the main characters were a white guy and a white girl (take three guesses who's going to get the girl) and the white guy seems to have a big black friend. And a light went off: its the AD box cover a hero, his "dark" companion, and a girl. Its a simple recipe of 1 part action, 1 part adventure, with a garnish of romance

Its rather cliche in that you see the same thing with Han Solo, Chewie and Leia
to a limited degree its the Lone Ranger and Tonto (thus romance only being a garnish and sometimes not added).

I'm trying to think of other examples but with the beginning of a head cold I cant think of any or I'm completely out in left field with this.

Regardless of how many examples of this there are I suspect that it actually says something about men or boys in general and our society in particular. I'm just having a hard time thinking straight right now. Anyone have a comment?
