I've been combing thru a series of post here:
http://randomwizard.blogspot.com/2013/09/d30-day-17-question-animal.htm… />
The blogger talks about convergent evolution where in a continent had all its animals descend from a marsupial and instead of sheep you get a kangaroo and instead of wolves you got a thalycine [Tasmanian Tiger- now extinct, see video footage of last one in captivity in 1933].

I like the ideas he discusses, though superficially, I tackled this a little when I developed the wyvole from the yazirian evolutionary tree- a wolf with the abiltity to climb trees and glide like the yazirian. As I think on this I did the same thing in my planetary brief on Laco in the SFman too.

To be sure an ecological system will have multiple forms that diverge significantly like birds, fish and mammals. but I like the idea of crafting a series of creatures to exist in a single planetary environment.

The old dragon magazine article "Whole Earth Ecology" discuss some of this too.

I think this is something we could use more of in any game setting.
