I'm torn here. Star Frontiers Knight Hawks introduced a skill called Astrogation which was required to plot a course between star systems. In Star Wars people relied on navigational computers. Here's my initial thoughts which dates back to a post on this site;

Knowledge:Astrogation - this skill allows a character to plot a non-standard course in the galaxy. The character does not rely on navigation buoys or a navigational computer to plot courses. This skill includes the study of spatial anomalies, space, nova's, black holes, whatever. A character with this skill would be sent to study and catalogue newly discovered star systems. Therefore this skill has a direct game effect and a background skill used for role-playing.

Navigation buoys or Navbuoy - these devices are located through a system. The minimum is usually six to cover each exit point out of a system although newly discovered systems would have perhaps one. Major systems would have several, especially near habitatable worlds. A character contacts a navbuoy and downloads the information in order to plot a jump through hyperspace. It's time consuming and you are tracked whenever contacting a buoy.

Navigation computers or NavaComps take the place of an astrogator. These are specialized hardware and software that links up with the hyperdrive.

Thoughts?
