EVE vs SF: How alike or disimilar are they?

I've been playing EVE Online for about a month now.  There are some obvious differences - there are four PC human factions, and numerous NPC human factions, but no aliens.  Its all space, though they are introducing some planetary actions (in the form of mining).  The missions are largely combat, though there is some exploration and intrigue.  Of course, there are many other players, and interaction with them is varied from simple chit-chat to trade to war, all depending on how individuals react over chat.  Some of the similarities I've found is in the complex skill system, space travel, and the overall feel of the game (in a Knight Hawks kind of way).  I'm wondering, how many others play/have played EVE, and what are your thoughts on the similarities and differences?  How does your experience compare?  Additionally, have you taken anything from EVE for your own SF games?
