Ettiquette regarding joining a project

Ok, I've read some forum posts and checked out the site, now I'm thinking of joining a project or two to get involved, but I want to see if there's a process involved.

Do I just join the project(s) that sound interesting and say hello?

Or contact a project member first?

or ...?

Don't want to step on any toes.
